Be Prepared for
Hurricane Season is June 1 to November 30
As with most things, the best defense is a good offense - or the best way to survive a huricane/storm is to be prepared.
Before the Storm
All residents of South Florida need to be prepared for storms. Supplies should be laid in and ready by the start of hurricane season – June 1. Let's face it, few of us do. An easy way to stock your home is to buy a couple of gallons of water and some canned foods every time you go grocery shopping. Make sure the food you stock is food that you like. Nothing worse than being hungry and only having yeech food to eat. Experience teaches that after stress, there is a craving for sweets. Though it is not a time to overindulge, you may want to have some treats and sodas on hand. (Stuck with hurricane supplies you don't want - donate them to a food bank or homeless shelter.)
If you have a grill, make sure that you have plenty of fuel on hand (propane or charcoal). Now is the time to make sure that you can cook on your grill. Let's not forget life's essentials, like being able to make coffee.
The worse time to shop is just before the storm hits. So, shop early and be prepared.
Take pictures of all your valuables (including furniture) for insurance purposes. It is recommended that you put the picturres (or disc with the pictures) in a ziploc bag with your insurance policy. It is a good practice to put all important papers in ziploc bags prior to the storm. Letter sized paper fit nicely in a 2 gallon bag.
You should have a plan in place for where you will weather the storm.
Who needs to evacuate and when
If the storm is a Category 3 or higher, residents east of Central Blvd. and north of Fredrick Small Road (Canterbury Place San Palermo, Somerset, and Valencia) are in the evacuation zone. No other Abacoa neighborhood is in the evacuation zone.
